An expository guide designed for preachers
and teachers, Looking on the Heart cultivates
fertile theological content within the historical
narratives of 1 Samuel.
Volume 1 covers the first fourteen chapters of
1 Samuel—the end of the era of the judges and
the beginning of Israel's monarchy. Looking on
the Heart follows the pattern of Such a Great
Salvation (Judges) and No Falling Words
(Joshua), both by Davis, in the Expositor's Guide
to the Historical Books series.
Davis brings cultural and historical color to the
task of interpretation, with a pastor's heart for
personal application. The reader finds a point of
contact with the lives of Samuel, Saul, Jonathan,
and David as Davis answers the question, What
does God seek when he looks on the heart?
"Such sensitivity to the biblical theology of the
text is a crucial correction to much of modern
exposition," said John W. Hilder of another of
Davis's Expositor's Guides. "Reading the
commentary is itself a devotional exercise"
(Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society).
Dale Ralph Davis holds a Ph.D. from Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary. He has served as senior pastor ot
Aisquith Presbyterian Church in Baltimore and is now
associate professor of Old Testament at Reformed
Theological Seminary.
