Yogananda was the first great master of India
to live in the West for a long period—over
thirty years. He was the founder of Self-
Realisation Fellowship, a non-sectarian
organization with branches on four continents,
and initiated tens of thousands of students into
Yoga, the scientific techniques for awakening
the divine consciousness of man.
This is the first time that an authentic Hindu
Yogi has written his life story for Western readers.
He describes in vivid detail many years of
spiritual training under Sri Yukteswar, a
Christ-like master, and gives eye-witness
accounts of the extraordinary lives and powers
of modern Hindu saints, revealing a fascinating
phase of modern India.
SOME EXTRACTS FROM REVIEWS
•East and West have each their own contribution
to make to the spiritual progress of mankind,
and this book shows how great is that which
India has made and is still making:
•The life of a Yogi is spent in continuous
realization of divine union. There is no sense of
separation to mar his self-identification with
the Cosmic Principle. Of all this we have
abundant proof in Yogananda•s book.'
•Tells in simple and measured language of the
deepest spiritual truths discovered by man
about himself and the universe.'
•A Hindu Yogi known to lecture audiences in
the United States and in England describes his
childhood in India, his later training under
his guru with whom he learnt "the definite,
scientific technique of self-realization" :
'This is an amazing book, which demands the
serious attention of every Christian thinker ..
Its implied challenge to Western thought,
however, ought not to be ignored or evaded.'
